Japan Conferences: 2022 in Review
Here’s a short recap of where and what we discussed.
Conferences are always exciting and filled with thought-provoking ideas and discussions. This was indeed the case in 2022, a year that was packed with many great panel discussions and presentations across the Japan/Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. In addition to communicating past research results and findings through presentations, I was happy to serve as conference chair and panel moderator. In these roles, I was able to engage and discuss with leading industry thinkers and luminaries. This paved the way for future research themes and insights, all of which were quite valuable to me. People meet and exchange opinions and ideas, with the result of deeper discussion. To my mind, the preparation and nerves that precede the big day are fundamental to the mission of being an analyst and at the heart of our profession.
Since the post pandemic, hybrid (digital and in-person) has become the norm in the conference scene. Events sponsored by industry associations, media, and vendors have moved to webinar formats, and Celent’s Innovation and Insight (I&I) Week was again conducted in a digital format this year. The digital transformation (DX) of these conferences is accelerating the distribution of on-demand digital content and making huge synchronous and asynchronous human interactions via web screens routine. We also celebrated reunions with many industry professionals at the venue participation event and rediscovered the gratification of the real world.
As we begin 2023, we look back at the conferences and Celent webinars of 2022.
Here are the common threads running through the discussions in the banking, insurance, securities, wealth management, and risk management industries: customer experience; digital transformation; data and analytics; legacy and ecosystem modernization; and innovation execution.
WATERS TECH WEBINAR: ACHIEVING COST-EFFICIENCY AND RESILIENCE IN CAPITAL MARKETS OPERATIONS | 2022/1/25
The 2022 conference kicked off with a discussion of capital markets. Celent provided the keynote address for the Capital Markets Webinar and moderated a panel discussion on cost-efficiency and resilient technology strategies with Tokyo market thought leaders.
WatersTechnology is Capital Markets’ media outlet for the latest trends and breaking news in Capital Markets. The insights delivered through its investigative articles and events have a significant impact on technology and data professionals around the world. Celent supports its work as a member of its global advisory board.
The keynote highlighted buy side business and technology trends and emphasized the importance of an “end-to-end operational model” leading to operational efficiencies and alpha creation. The panel also discussed the current position of Japan’s capital markets under the following themes:
- Current pain points and resilience to gain: cost, vulnerability, legacy, resources, scalability, operating model, organization and structure, stakeholders, and vendor partners.
- Themes for operational transformation to stay ahead of market and regulatory changes: balancing economics and scalability, data-driven architecture, customer-centricity, middle/back office visibility, reporting profiteering, and how to align the organization with agile IT.
- How, when, and where to innovate: front-to-back integration, enterprise data management (EDM/ IBOR), open platforms, utility services, cloud-native to capital markets

(JP) RECAP OF INNOVATION & INSIGHT WEEK 2022: THRIVE! | 2022/4/11–7/18
In 2022, Celent’s Innovation & Insight (I&I) event celebrated its 16th year.
Through the Model Awards Program, Celent identifies and celebrates the best uses of technology in financial services, including banking, insurance, wealth management, capital markets, and risk and compliance.
I&I Week 2022 was a three-day virtual summit, March 15–17, featuring live presentations, Model Award-winning project announcements, awardee case study videos, fireside chats, breakout sessions, and more. The summit was a success because of all the people who applied for the awards program, the winners, the event sponsors, the presenters, and everyone who attended the event.
After the event, we continued to release a lot of digital content through the I&I Week platform hub pages. This webinar series is a summary and commentary of that in Japanese. We featured interviews, replays of live sessions, videos featuring innovative implementations by award winners, and links to case study reports.

AIRBANC: ASIA CONFERENCE ON BANCASSURANCE AND ALTERNATIVE DISTRIBUTION CHANNELS | 2022/5/17–18
AIRbanc is Asia Insurance Review’s (AIR) longest-running international conference. Each year, over 100 participants—including insurers, brokers, agents, banks, and financial IT vendors—attend AIRbanc, held in Singapore and other major cities in Asia. As the conference name suggests, the focus is on the use of alternative channels for insurance distribution, but in recent years, the agenda has shifted to institutional and product design, including mergers and acquisitions and the use of technology in this context.
In recent years, the conference has attracted a great deal of attention from the insurance and banking industries, as well as the financial IT industry. The conference has included presentations on advanced case studies of Asian subsidiaries of global insurance companies, as well as discussions on the modernization of distribution channels using new technologies and strategies in fast-growing emerging Asian economies. Celent has been contributing as a knowledge partner for many years (Manila, 2018; Jakarta, 2017; Jakarta, 2016).
The subject of the 2022 conference, held online, was “Who leads bancassurance today: Customers? Banks? Insurers? Digital?” Collaboration between the insurance and banking industries, the expansion of microinsurance, and the use of technology were the subjects of the conference. The panelists discussed growth strategies for the financial and insurance industries in Asia, which are experiencing phenomenal growth in various socioeconomic environments at different maturity levels, including analytics and AI, RPA and automation, Fintech and Insurtech, and more.

(JP) NIKKEI XTECH EXPO 2022: E-INVOICING IN JAPAN ― INNOVATION OPPORTUNITIES FROM A TREASURER’S PERSPECTIVE | 2022/10/14
(JP) Nikkei FinTech is a media outlet that decodes the future of finance through technology trends.
Celent has provided much of the content for the (JP) FinTech World Almanac since its inception in 2016. Nikkei Business Publications Inc. is the first media company to launch a “flag” there when a new market or industry is launched. By putting up a flag, people and information will gather there, and the market will be activated. Nikkei FinTech is one such media that was launched just as the fintech market was about to dawn.
(JP) Nikkei Crosstech EXPO 2022 is Nikkei BP’s crosstech event including Nikkei FinTech. Celent provided the keynote presentation, “E-Invoicing in Japan ― Innovation Opportunities from a Treasurer’s Perspective,” at the special seminar “Back Office Operations DX that Must Be Done.”
