Celent Securities & Investments Newsletter, April 2013
Research Director's Point of View
We Are on the Hunt for Innovation
I appreciate author/speaker Malcolm Gladwell because he makes eccentric seem cool. "When we become expert in something, our tastes grow more esoteric and complex," he notes in Blink: The Power of Thinking without Thinking.
Secondly, he defends intuition. “We need to respect the fact that it is possible to know without knowing why we know and accept that -- sometimes -- we're better off that way.”
Over time, Celent's Securities & Investments (S&I) team has determined that clients need coverage of more than market trends and vendor analysis. Our clients want our intuition -- specifically around innovative new technologies and business models which can be applied to reinvigorate market segments and whole industries.
We are on the hunt for innovation in our industry, and the S&I team is augmenting our research agenda. We have launched reports that highlight key areas within S&I where innovation is leading to market disruption. These Innovation in Focus notes will be topical and quick hitting.
Since we think the S&I marketplace is diverse with interconnected and complex market segments, we will rely on our expertise to determine what is truly innovative. To paraphrase the US Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, we know innovation "when we see it." In terms of themes, we will discuss both innovative technologies and innovative business models.
We think clients will appreciate this augmentation to our agenda, which is why it is for your exclusive use.
We have already launched two reports of this type:
- Innovation in Focus: Electronic Trading Platforms in US Corporate Bonds
- Innovation in Focus: New Trading Models in US OTC Fixed Income Derivatives
Going forward, we will be issuing Innovation in Focus notes across capital markets, finance and risk, and wealth management. We will also be hosting events around innovative companies like this one planned in New York on June 20.
Happy hunting!
