A Major Overhaul Provides Even Greater Insights
Celent has been doing IT spend forecasting for banking for more than twenty years and it remains one of our flagship reports. The start of the pandemic saw the first and only major change in our approach to their creation, as much out of necessity as anything, as we all scrambled to understand how banks were responding.
Now that we look to be heading out of at least the worst of the pandemic into a “New Normal”, and withKieran Hines joining me as co-author of the project and it seemed a good time to reassess what we do and how. I’m pleased to announce a major overhaul not just in how we approach our IT Spending forecasts, but also in the questions that we can address for clients.
The biggest change, and the foundation of our approach going forward has been the launch of the Celent Banking IT Strategy Survey (CBISS). The CBISS is a global survey of bankers, allowing us to dig in much deeper than we have ever been able to before. This year survey had 378 respondents across both corporate and retail banking, from 36 countries, across 6 regions. Finally, we ensured that the respondents came from a range of sizes as well.
Key themes covered by CBISS include IT budgets and spending plans by category:
- External: Software, Services (including cloud)
- Internal: Hardware, Personnel/Internal IT
The survey also provides important context to these budgets and prioritization decisions. Areas covered include:
- IT budget changes in 2022, and expectations for 2023
- Drivers of technology strategy in 2022
- Investment in horizontal technologies
- Product level objectives and investment priorities
This has allowed us to be much more granular in our insights. As a result, you can expect a series of reportsthat will be published through Q1 and Q2 2022. Indeed, there are two live already - IT Strategy And Priorities In Retail Banking, 2022, and Retail Bank IT Strategy In North America, 2022.
The full series of reports will include equivalent ones for corporate banking, as well as reports on the actual forecasts themselves. Given the granularity of the data we can also provide bespoke slices of the data.
Let us know what you think. We already have a few ideas for how to improve and add for next year!
P.S. If you’d like to participate in the survey next year, drop us a message, and all participants signing up this way will get a copy of the global report as a thank you!
