Abstract

In June 2022, Celent published a report called Modernizing the US Card Processing Platforms: Stories of Digital Transformation. The report discussed in detail the transformation efforts at three of the largest card processing platforms in the US, including Fiserv Optis. At the time we said, “Neither of the three firms is done yet, and all will continue to invest into further enhancing and modernizing their platforms.” A couple of years later, we were keen to catch up with the Fiserv Optis team again to learn more about their progress and current areas of focus. On June 12, 2024, we had an in-depth briefing with Katie Whalen, senior vice president of North America Issuer Processing at the time.

When we spoke two years ago, Fiserv was focusing on developing and upgrading applications surrounding its core processing system. Now, the company is prioritizing and committing to a top-to-bottom reengineering of its core issuer processing system, focusing on real time and event-driven architecture, platform independence, and automation. A major focus over the next 18 months will be reengineering the disputes component of the servicing domain to improve efficiency and client experience. The transformation is inspired by the Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) domain model to enhance interoperability and standardization. This report provides much more detail on Fiserv's approach is a must read for anyone interested in the transformation of core cards and payments platforms.

In our view, Fiserv should be applauded for its ambition to reengineer its core processing platform. Assuming it can successfully manage the transformation risks, it will be an attractive option for both new and existing clients looking to modernize their cards infrastructure.
