Gareth Lodge is a Senior Analyst at Celent with a focus on corporate payments. When's he's not providing leading expertise on things like payment hubs or real-time payments, you can find Gareth indulging in good food, learning about new gin and of course adding to his musical library!
WHERE ARE YOU FROM ORIGINALLY / WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?
I was born in Wales, hence my very traditional first name. I lived there…months, but before moving round the country, and then growing up in St Albans. I’d lived there for over a decade before I realized the word Snorbens, used widely locally, was how the locals pronounced St Albans!
WHERE DO YOU CURRENTLY RESIDE?
A small commuter town just outside of London called Welwyn Garden City. Delightfully boring and safe – a recent front-page headline in the town paper when a bike went missing. With a front page headline the following week when it was found, not actually even lost, let alone stolen!
WHAT WAS A TURNING POINT FOR YOU?
I became an analyst by accident. Sitting in the Strategy team, I used to own the analyst contacts. After a while, one of them pointed out that I was actually answering more of their questions than they were of mine and perhaps I’d like to join them. The rest, as they say, is history.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CITY/PLACE YOU’VE TRAVELED?
My usual answer is “the next one” – I do like discovering new places. I’ve been lucky enough to have been many memorable places, from Sydney to Moscow to Tokyo. I do like being by the sea and I don’t think you can go too far wrong with Italy, so perhaps somewhere on the Amalfi coast?
FAVORITE HOBBY?
Not sure I have any hobbies but I do rather like food – cooking (badly) and eating (too much) – and friends would say I have a mild gin obsession!
FAVORITE BAND / MUSIC / SONG?
Too many to list! I have a very big music collection (think thousands of albums…) and growing daily.
FAVORITE FOOD DISH?
Gosh – too many too list. I like pretty much everything. If I had to absolutely choose just one, it’d be a Sunday Roast of Beef.
WHAT DOES BEING AN ANALYST MEAN?
I jokingly tell friends that my job is largely to sit at home and chat and think! I think a large part of what I do to gather lots of data points from those conversations, think about past experience, and then to be able to put them together into a coherent story – what is the impact, what strategic response will they need, and how does that then translate into a technology initiative.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I guess one indication is how many clients have now worked with me for over a decade – I figure I must be doing something right at least! Given NDAs, it’s frustrating sometimes not to be able to say “I did that” or in at least one case, “I helped a client not do that!”, particularly as I have relationships with the majority of vendors in my coverage space.
