Announcing Celent's HSA Benchmarking Survey

Although health savings accounts have received much industry and press coverage since 2004, there has been a general lack of quantitative HSA performance data. Most published information has been limited to marketwide HSA account numbers and balance levels. When bank-level data is presented, all banks are treated alike, and "apples to oranges" comparisons are the norm. Given this, Celent recognized that HSA custodial banks require a deeper level of research that enables meaningful performance measurement vis-à-vis industry peers. In response to banks' needs, Celent launched its semiannual HSA Benchmarking Survey in January 2008. The study provides a highly revealing view of HSA program performance.

About the Benchmarking Survey

Banks participating in the HSA Benchmarking Survey are able to map their performance against competitors of similar asset sizes and business models in the following areas:

  • Number of accounts, balances, and investment levels
  • Deposits and withdrawals
  • Setup fees, monthly fees, and investment fees, by type of group and individual markets
  • Revenue levels and mix
  • Cost levels and mix
  • Income levels
  • Partnership types and number; distribution channel mix (share of sales)
  • Online functionality (type of online features/services)
  • Organizational structure

All bank responses are kept completely anonymous. Survey participants receive a "give back" session, in which Celent analysts will present a comparative analysis of disguised bank-level data. Any data that could be associated with a specific bank will be either standardized and/or aggregated into segments.

Survey Timing

Celent's HSA Benchmarking Survey is conducted semiannually, in January (covering preceding December performance) and in August (covering preceding July performance). January 2008 was the inaugural round, and the second round will take place in August 2008.
